FRAMING THE CHALLENGE
In the context of a Royal Commission and a demerger from NAB, how could a newly defined purpose assist one of Australia’s oldest financial institutions to create financial security for more Australians?
RESPONSIBILITIES
I conducted desktop research to gather, analyse and distill insights through a multifaceted investigation into organisational core purpose including: Purpose-led organisation case studies; Competitor analysis, Global customer values trends; Customer interviews; organisational strategy. In parallel I designed and co-facilitated three types of workshops to engage over 350 staff and leaders in groups of between 6 and 60 participants. I collaborated with colleagues to distill all inputs and articulate three possible future territories for MLC as a series of three books.
OUTCOMES
At a point of inflection, change and unknowns, this project offered a framework for the staff, senior management and executive team to reflect on their reason for existing beyond making money. In doing so, we uncovered passion and energy in a team under huge external pressure and together conceived what a purposeful future might look like for the organisation.
REFLECTION
Large organisations such as MLC offer big levers for social change. This project presented an amazing opportunity to influence the leadership and core purpose of a major financial institution and the potential to bring financial security to more Australians.
